Tim Spector on the New Science of Eating Well

Science &
Technology

‘The nutrition revolution is well underway and Tim Spector is one of the visionaries leading the way.’ – Yotam Ottolenghi

Poor diet accounts for around 50% of common diseases – cancer, arthritis, heart disease and dementia. And our food decisions are the single most effective way we can prevent illness and stay healthy. But the question of what exactly we should eat has never been so complicated. We were once told that butter and cheese were linked to high cholesterol and heart disease, and now we learn that’s all wrong. We read about the amazing properties of kale or açai berries and then we hear there is no such thing as a superfood. Artificial sweeteners and fat-reduced foods, once recommended, are now deemed unhealthy, and salt and coffee, once demonised, are now recognised as safe.

To guide us through the complexities of the fast-moving new science of food, bestselling author and scientist Tim Spector comes to Intelligence Squared on November 17. In conversation with doctor and broadcaster Guddi Singh he will draw on of his new book Food For Life: The New Science of Eating Well and explain how individual foods, key chemicals, our genes and our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria that live in our gut – all interact in unique and highly personalised ways. Investigating everything from environmental impact and food fraud to allergies and deceptive labelling, Spector will show us the extraordinary properties of everyday foods, which scientists are only just beginning to understand.

Join us to learn how we can make the right food choices for ourselves, our loved ones and the planet.
