The Age of Manipulation, with Cass Sunstein

Will new technologies like artificial intelligence provide us with more freedom or less?

According to Cass Sunstein, renowned lawyer, behavioural economist and author of global bestseller Nudge, we need to be extremely wary of AI products that grant us greater agency when in reality they are designed to push us in specific directions to take our time and money.

Sunstein believes that the digital world has unleashed a new age of manipulation. On October 16 he comes to Intelligence Squared to explain why this is bad and what we can all do about it. He will explain why he believes manipulation is different to unobjectionable forms of influence, including ‘nudges’; and explain why online manipulation and manipulation by artificial intelligence, algorithms, and generative AI pose a specific threat which must be addressed and challenged. He will also offer practical guidance for countering manipulation and protecting our children from online harms.
