Speakers: Shoma Chaudhury, Nadeem Aslam
Author Nadeem Aslam discusses his book The Wasted Vigil (2008). He discusses the many factors that have influenced his writing, the way he sees Islam, his family, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the time he spent in Afghanistan. His family were forced to flee Pakistan as political exiles when he was a child, and both sides of his family (maternal and paternal) have had a strong influence on his view of Islam and what it means to be a Muslim.
Aslam sees Afghanistan as a beautiful country ravaged by 25 years of war, and says the way we perceive the country is flawed. He also discusses the beauty of the Qur'an, a beautiful and compassionate book, that is misinterpreted to suit the political agenda of fundamentalists - a theme explored in his book.
