Director of the Institute of the Mind, Baroness Susan Greenfield delivers a talk on Neurodegeneration and the battle against Alzheimer’s. One of the great health issues facing us in the twenty first century, Alzheimer’s is a recapitulation to childhood as all the unique connections your brain has made over the years begin to unravel and you retrace the steps to a childlike state of disorientation and confusion. She outlines her two dreams for the treatment of the Alzheimer’s; firstly a surrogate marker for early detection, and second a “blocker” that will prevent further degeneration. Greenfield hopes that by combining these two goals; a surrogate marker administered in a standard blood test with a medicine that can prevent cell degeneration and halt the onset of symptoms, they will effectively cure Alzheimer’s.
