Solarcentury was founded in 1998 to design and supply solar energy solutions for the built environment. Founder and Executive Chairman Jeremy Leggett established Solarcentury to address the threat of climate change by reducing CO₂ emissions through the application of solar energy.
Solar photovoltaics (PV) generate electricity directly from daylight, and can be used on buildings to meet part of their electricity demand. Solarcentury has worked alongside building developers, local authorities, engineers and architects to develop a number of different solutions for installing PV on buildings in the UK. One popular Solarcentury product is PV roof tiles, which have been developed using custom-built PV modules, and integrate simply with standard tiles used in the UK.
Solarcentury has installed 3 MWp of solar PV capacity so far, which is generating an estimated 2,370 MWh of electricity per year, and avoiding the emission of 1,350 tonnes of CO2. As one of the most significant renewable energy companies in the UK, Solarcentury has been a key player in the general development of the solar and renewable energy sector, and has significant involvement with training, information and professional development, as well as support for its own customers.
