Speakers: Saskia Olde Wolbers
Saskia Olde Wolbers explains the inspiration behind her video Kilowatt Dynasty (2000), which she made after reading an article about the construction of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangzte River in China. The area around the site was flooded, creating the 'underwater towns' that provided the inspiration for Wolbers' work. Drawing on Salman Rushdie's 1981 work Midnight's Children, the work is narrated by an imagined child due to be born once the dam is completed.
