Speakers: Phillip V Tobias, Jack Klaff
Phillip Tobias talks to Jack Klaff about the life and work of his predecessor as Head Department of Anatomy and Human Biology, University of Witwatersrand, Raymond Arthur Dart, whose discovery of the hominin species Australopithecus africanus – termed Dodd's Child – represents a major contribution to the study of human evolution.
Not only did Dart's discovery send shockwaves through the academic community, it also had significant social and religious repercussions. Tobias explains the ongoing argument between theologists and evolutionists, and also the opposition that Tobias faced from within his own profession.
Palaeoanthropologist; Professor Emeritus, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
