Speakers: Judith Kerr
The German born author and illustrator talks about her experiences as a child fleeing Nazi Germany. The ‘wonderful adventure’ of refugee life would become her best-selling novel When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit but here she talks about how hard it must have been for her parents. Her father was a journalist who mocked the Nazi party before they came to power and in 1932 he appeared on a list of people they wanted to have shot when they did come to power. He also encouraged his children (then 5 and 7 years old respectively) to declare themselves ‘free thinkers’ when asked what religion they were. Kerr talks about their brief lives in Switzerland and France and the kindness of the English population.
