Speakers: Jon Ronson
Jon Ronson provides an entertaining insight into his exploration of mental illness and the mind of the psychopath. Upon picking up a volume of DSM, the manual of mental disorders, Ronson was able to diagnose himself with a total of 12, occasionally contradictory, disorders. It appears that all behaviour can be viewed as suspect, as one of Jon Ronson’s interviewees, Tony, found to his cost. After trying to evade a 5 year prison term with a fake plead of insanity Tony has now been in Broadmoor for 12 years with a diagnosis of psychopathy. The author’s meeting with Tony led him to take a course on how to spot the one psychopath in every 100 people (AA Gill is a ‘classic psychopath’ apparently) and to take a fresh look at people he’s met – from a Haitian death-squad leader to a remorseless CEO – to see whether psychopathy holds the key to their morally dubious behaviour.
