Speakers: Humphrey Hawksley, John Kampfner
Former diplomatic editor of the Times Michael Binyon chairs this discussion with John Kampfner and Humphrey Hawksley.
In Freedom For Sale (2010), political writer Kampfner asks: why is it that so many people around the world appear willing to give up freedoms in return for security or prosperity? BBC foreign correspondent Hawksley asks if democracy is merely a fig-leaf to protect strategic interests and access economic markets? Together they look at the various forms democracy has taken in Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and India, debate the influence these have on China and examine the effects the move towards democracy on Iraq and Afghanistan.
