Thompson explains how it's best for journalists not to work from within the political sphere; whilst covering Jimmy Carter on the campaign trail in Massachusetts, he proved to be more popular than the future President. Thompson also recounts how he felt embarassed to have received his first paycheque ($20,000), and how this eventually led to him losing it all on the stock market.
