Francis Wheen on paranoia in the 1970s

03 Feb 2010

Speakers: Francis Wheen

Francis Wheen talks about his book Strange Days Indeed (2009) and discusses the paranoia that dominated the 1970s, stemming from coup conspiracies to general economic strife. He notes the particular paranoia of Harold Wilson, but claims that the prime minister’s crippling fear of plots to remove him from government wasn't entirely unfounded. Wheen also explores ideological shifts within the Labour Party and laments the decline in democratic debate since the advent of New Labour.
