Speakers: Slavoj Žižek
“The worst slave owners were those who were kind to their slaves” states the renowned philosopher and psychoanalyst, Slavoj Žižek in his critique of today’s cultural capitalism. Today’s capitalism amalgamates the consumer and the anti-consumer so that when we enter Starbucks and purchase a coffee we are not simply purchasing a beverage but buying into ethical, good coffee karma and buying our redemption from being only a consumer. Despite its ennobled aims, Žižek states that charity merely prolongs the problems it seeks to address and that a reconstruction of society is needed.
