Eve Ensler on The City of The Joy, at 5x15

28 Feb 2011

Speakers: Eve Ensler

Eve Ensler tells the tragic story of Congolese women, and explains how, through, the City of Joy, she hopes these same women can 'turn their pain into power'. Ensler first became aware of the terrible atrocities being perpetuated in Congo, when she visited the country four and a half years ago to meet Dr Denis Mukwege. Whilst there she saw first-hand the results of these atrocities, as Dr Mukwege treated victims of these attacks, committed by men as a tactic of war. It was this experience that drove her to help in the founding of the City of the Joy, in Bukavu. The village was built over two years by a workforce comprised entirely of victims of sexual violence in the Congo – all of whom had no idea how to construct a building before they joined the project.

Now that the village is open, it house 90 women, all victims of the violence in Congo, for 6 months and helps teach them a whole range of skills – literacy, computer, agricultural, and many more.
