Chang-Rae Lee on 'The Surrendered'

24 May 2010

Speakers: Chang-Rae Lee

Award-winning Korean-American author Chang-Rae Lee talks to Erica Wagner about his latest book, a novel of war, expatriatism and Korean culture. In The Surrendered, the lasting memory of the Korean War changes the lives of two survivors who, when reunited in America, are forced to come to terms with their shared experiences. As the story moves between 1950’s Korea and 1980’s New York and Italy, it weaves a stunning, layered story, exploring issues of class, identity, cultural memory, loyalty, betrayal, and personal reinvention. Lee talks about his own experience of what it is to be Korean in America, language, cultural origin, his writing and his personal notions of displacement and home.
