Speakers: Alain de Botton
According to Alain de Botton, the English are of the view that the older a house is, the more beautiful it is too. Everyone holidays in quaint old cottages, or visits country houses because of their history. There’s a great “mistrust” of modern architecture, he says. De Botton’s project over the last five years – aside from writing books - has been to get some of the best contemporary architects to build exciting and unusual houses in England, and he talks us through the stories behind each of the current five buildings. The aim, he says, is for people to visit and revere new architecture too, and eventually to find themselves demanding more of the places in which they live and sleep.
