Professor Jennifer Welsh explains the aims of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict. This division of the 21st Century School has a multi-disciplinary approach that brings together scholars from the fields of philosophy, law, and political science to examine how global problems are changing 'legal and traditional paradigms'. Modern conflicts, for example, have blurred the lines between combatants and non-combatants, and between conflict and post-conflict.
The Institute aims to examine how best to avoid wars, to regulate or terminate wars that are already in progress, and to look at issues such as implementing a global arms trade treaty.
