Speakers: David Lammy
In a broad defence of the value of higher education in Britain today, David Lammy articulates the importance of the liberal arts and humanities as aspects of our educational system, no less important than science and technology.
Lammy affirms that education in the arts is a defining factor of British culture in the 21st Century, and advocates the synthesis of liberal arts and humanities with science and technology. He claims this would have a positive cultural and economic impact by building British resources of graduates’ skills, knowledge and creativity.
Lammy’s main defence is not based primarily on the economic benefits of the liberal arts, but upon its very essence; at the core of the liberal arts are debate, contradiction, difference, and the acceptance of difference - values which reflect and shape modern society.
