Speakers: Aminatta Forna
Aminatta Forna talks about the African renaissance generation that was created during British decolonisation. She recounts the experiences of her father and other students who left Sierra Leone to study in England. The 'Renaissancers' left their countries for England and America, becoming the new African middle class when they returned, and had high hope of change - change that threatened the men that had come to power in their absence. Forna explains how the 'Renaissancers' never had their renaissance, and how the dream eventually soured.
