Philosopher and psychoanalyst
Slavoj Žižek, dialectical-materialist philosopher and psychoanalyst, is Co-Director of the International Center for Humanities, Birkbeck College, University of London. He was educated at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, where he received a Doctor of Arts in philosophy, before studying psychoanalysis at the University of Paris VIII. In the early 1970s he was employed by the University of Ljubljana as a researcher before performing his national service in the Yugoslav army. After fulfilling his national service, he was again employed as a researcher by the University of Ljubljana, where he is now a senior researcher at the Institute of Sociology. He is a professor at the European Graduate School and President of the Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis, and has been a visiting professor at a number of institutions, including the University of Chicago, New York University and the London Consortium.
Žižek was a was member of the Communist Party of Slovenia. In the late 1980s, he was part of a number of organisations which fought for the democratisation of Slovenia, including the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights. He rose to prominence as a philosopher after the publication of his first book in English The Sublime Object of Ideology (1989), and he has since published several books in numerous of languages, including Enjoy Your Symptom!: Jacques Lacan in Hollywood and Out (1992), The Parallax View (2006), How To Read Lacan (2006), and Living in the End Times (2010).
