Former ambassador and advisor to Tony Blair
Sir Stephen Wall was Tony Blair's long time advisor on the European Union and Head of the European Secretariat in the Cabinet Office until 2005. He resigned, in part because of his disappointment at Blair's decision to grant a referendum on the original European Constitution.
Wall held successive top posts in the Foreign Office and Downing Street under Conservative and Labour Prime Ministers. He helped negotiate European treaties, was at John Major's side throughout the Maastricht talks, and was UK ambassador in Brussels throughout the BSE crisis. He is now a leading member of Business in New Europe and Senior Advisor to Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster. He was appointed Chair of University College London (UCL) Council in 2008.
