Artist
Lawrence Weiner was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. In the mid 1960s, he exhibited work at the Seth Siegelaub Gallery in New York. His 1968 book Statements (widely acclaimed as one of the landmark conceptual art publications of the period) came at a point in his career when language became integral to the making of his art. Since then he has become well known for his use of typescript painted on walls, such as One Quart Green Exterior Industrial Enamel Thrown on a Brick Wall (1968), and Earth to Earth Ashes to Ashes Dust to Dust (1970).
Weiner has exhibited his work at, among others, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the Kunstsmuseum in Wolfsburg, and the Museum Ludwig, Cologne. His honors include the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1976 and 1983), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1994), and a Wolfgang Hahn Prize (1995).
