Archbishop of Canterbury
Rowan Williams studied theology at Cambridge before gaining a Dphil in the theology of Vladimir Lossky from Wadham College, Oxford in the mid 1970s. After two years lecturing at the college, he was ordained as a deacon. Returning to Cambridge, he pursued academic and parish work and from 1980-1983 served as curate at St George's Church in Chesterton. He held both academic and clerical positions at Oxford and Cambridge, before being awarded the degree Doctor of Divinity in 1990.
In 1999, Williams was chosen to be Archbishop of Wales, and in 2002 became the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury. He is renowned as a theologian and has written extensively on the themes of theology, spirituality, philosophy, religious aesthetics. His books include A Margin of Silence: The Holy Spirit in Russian Orthodox Theology (2008), and Wrestling with Angels: Conversations in Modern Theology (2007).
