Prime Minister's Advisor on Public Service Transformation
David Varney is the Prime Minister's Advisor on Public Service Transformation. He began his career with Shell in 1968, after graduating in chemistry at the University of Surrey. He held various positions at Shell in Sweden and London, before becoming Head of Shell Oil Products Europe in 1995. He left this position in 1996 to become Chief Executive of BG Group and was appointed Executive Chairman of MMO2 in 2001.
Varney chaired Business in the Community from 2002 to 2004, and HM Revenue and Customs from 2004 to 2006. He was also the President of the Chartered Institute of Management for 2005 to 2006.
