Gerontologist and Philosopher
Raymond Tallis is a British gerontologist, philosopher and poet. He served as Emeritus Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Manchester between 1987 and 2006, and has written over 200 research papers in the field of neurology of old age and neurological rehabilitation.
As well as being a distinguished academic, Tallis has published fiction, poetry, and numerous books on the philosophy of the mind, philosophical anthropology, and cultural criticism. His books include Unthinkable Thought: The Enduring Significance of Parmenides (2007), and The Kingdom of Infinite Space: A Fantastical Journey Around Your Head (2008). In honour of his work, he was awarded two honorary degrees – a DLitt from the University of Hull, and a LittD from Manchester University. He was also elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2000, and won the Dhole Eddlestone Prize in 2002, the Founders Medal of the British Geriatrics Society in 2006, and the Lord Cohen Gold Medal for Research into Ageing in 2007. He is currently honorary Visiting Professor in the Department of English at the University of Liverpool.
