Art historian and curator
Nicholas Serota was appointed Director of the Tate in 1988, and has overseen a period of expansion that has seen two new galleries launched (Tate St. Ives in 1993 and Tate Modern in 2000), along with rebranding and launch of the Millbank gallery as Tate Britain.
Serota read History of Art at the University of Cambridge (after switching from economics), and, before joining Tate he held directorial positions at London’s Whitechapel Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford and was Chairman of the Young Friends of the Tate organisation. He was knighted in 1999 and was, until 2007, chairman of the Turner Prize Jury.
