Former England cricketer; journalist and author
Ed Smith is a former England cricketer and Cambridge graduate. Whilst studying History at Tonbridge and Peterhouse, he became the youngest ever Cambridge undergraduate to score a century on his first class debut. He went on to represent England, and played for Kent and Sussex, but retired in 2008 after spending most of the year recovering from an ankle injury. He is now a leader writer for The Times, and previously worked for the Daily Telegraph, where he wrote the Mindgames column.
Smith is the author of What Sport Tells Us About Life (2008), a discussion of the role of sport in society, and its moral and ethical lessons, and the On and Off the Field (2003), which was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year and The Cricket Society Book of the Year Award in 2004.
