Member of the Parliament of Ukraine; journalist
Andriy Schevchenko began his journalistic career in 1995. Since then he has worked as a correspondent for Pislyamova, TSN, Litsa Mira broadcasts, “The Voice of America” radio, UBN radio (New York) and as an anchorman for Novy Channel.
During 2002-2004 Schevchenko headed the Ukrainian journalistic campaign against censorship, became the first chair of Kyiv independent media trade union, and initiated the creation of the “5th Channel”. During 2003-2005, he worked as its chief editor and as anchorman of “Chas” TV show. In 2005 he became the Vice President on information policy for Ukrainian National Television.
At the Ukrainian national parliamentary elections of 2006 and 2007, Schevchenko was elected to the Verkhovna Rada as no. 5 on the election list of the political party Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko. He now holds the position of First Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information Policy.
Schevchenko's film “The face of protests”, earned him the Journalist of the Generation prize. He was also awarded the freedom of speech prize by Reporters Without Borders and the Teletriumph prizes for best anchorman of information programs, best information program and best documentary.
