Academic, former Israeli Ambassador to the US, and former President of Tel Aviv University
Itamar Rabinovich is the former Israeli Ambassador to the US and was Tel Aviv University’s President for eight years. Rabinovich studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University, before obtaining his PhD from UCLA. He was made a Senior Research Fellow at TAU’s Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, and is the incumbent of the Yona and Dina Ettinger Chair in Contemporary History of the Middle East.
Rabinovich was Israel’s Chief Negotiator with Syria under the late Yitzhak Rabin and Ambassador in Washington from 1993-96. He has served as Director of the Moshe Dayan Center, Dean of the Entin Faculty of Humanities, and TAU Rector. He is the author of several books including Syria Under the Ba’th (1972), The War for Lebanon (1985), The Road Not Taken: Early Arab-Israeli Negotiations (1991), The Brink of Peace: Israel and Syria (1999), and Waging Peace: Israel and the Arabs at the End of the Century (2004), and has written numerous articles, essays and chapters in books as well as articles in leading professional journals. Additionally, he has been awarded the Commandeur l'ordre des Palmes Académiques, a French order of chivalry awarded to academics.
