Photographer
Martin Parr is a British photographer with an international reputation for innovative imagery. Since 2004 has been Professor of Photography at the University of Wales, Newport. Parr has staged exhibitions at galleries all over the world, including ParrWorld at the BALTIC, Gateshead (2009), Common Sense at the Niagara Gallery, Melbourne (2005), at the Montreal Festival of Photography (2005), and at Die Kunstall, Mannheim (2005). Parr has also curated a number of exhibitions, including Young British Photography at the Gallery du Jour, Paris (1996), and British Contemporary Photography, at the Houston Photo Festival (1986). He was Guest Artistic director for the Recontres D’Arles in 2004 and Guest Curator for the New York Photo Festival (where he curated the New Typologies exhibition) in 2008. A retrospective of his Parr’s work was held at the Barbican Art Gallery and the National Media Museum in 2002.
Parr has won a number of awards during his career, including the Royal Photographic Society’s Centenary Award, the Photo Espana Award for Photographic Achievement (both 2008), and Photokina’s Eric Solomon Award for Photojournalism in 2006. His books include The Last Resort (1986), and A Fair Day (1984).
