Chancellor of the Exchequer; MP, Tatton, Cheshire
George Osborne began his career as a journalist, before joining the Conservative Party in 1994. He read Modern History at the University of Oxford, where he also co-edited the university's history magazine Isis. After a short stint working for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, he worked for the then leader of the Conservative party William Hague as a speech writer and Political secretary.
In 2001 he was elected as MP for Tatton, in Cheshire, and became Chief Secretary to the Treasury of the Shadow Cabinet. In 2005 he was appointed as the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, and became Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government following the 2010 general election.
