Newspaper editor
Anne McElvoy is Executive Editor of the London Evening Standard. She began her career at The Times in the late 1980s after graduating from Oxford with a degree in German and Philosophy. Whilst at The Times, she reported on eastern Europe, and became the paper’s bureau chief in Moscow in the early ‘90s. After serving as Deputy Editor of the Spectator, she moved to The Independent in the late ‘90s. She assumed her current position at the Standard in 2002, where she also writes a weekly column. McElvoy is also a broadcaster, and frequently appears on television programmes such as Newsnight and Question Time.
McElvoy is author of two books: The Saddled Cow: East Germany’s Life & Legacy (1992), and Man Without a Face: The Autobiography Of Communism's Greatest Spymaster (2003, with Markus Wolf).
