Allan H Meltzer

Professor of Political Economy, Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University

Allan H Meltzer is a prominent economist considered a world expert on development and the applications of monetary policy, and currently serves as Professor of Political Economy at the Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University. He attended Duke University and earned his PhD from UCLA in 1958. From 1973 to 1999, he served as the Chair of the Shadow Open Market Committee – a group of economists, academics, and bankers that met to critique the actions of the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee. He sat on the Council of Economic Advisors for Presidents Kennedy and Reagan and between 1999 and 2000 was the Chairman of the International Financial Institution Advisory Commission, known as the Meltzer Commission, which proposed changes to the workings of the World Bank.

Meltzer received the inaugural ARI Irving Kristol Award in 2003. He has written several publications including the two-volume A History of the Federal Reserve (2004).
