Broadcaster
Martyn Lewis is one of Britain’s best-known broadcasters. Lewis began his career with BBC Northern Ireland in the late 1960s, after graduating from Trinity College, Dublin. After brief spells as a newsreader with HTV and ITN, he moved to the BBC in 1986, eventually going on to present the Six O’Clock News and the Nine O’Clock News. He was also the host of the news-based television programme Today’s The Day from 1993 to 1999. He retired from news reading in 1999, but periodically presents programmes for ITV. After his retirement, Lewis set up Anglo-American company, Teliris, to develop a revolutionary new system which enables people thousands of miles apart to meet as though they were sitting in the same room
Lewis founded the charity YouthNet in 1995 and is president of United Response, a charity that supports people with mental health problems or learning disabilities. He was awarded a CBE for his charity work in 1997.
