Journalist and novelist
John Lanchester is a journalist and novelist who has written for publications such as The Observer, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, and the London Review of Books, where he was previously a Deputy Editor. He is the author of the novels Mr Phillips (2000), Fragrant Harbour (2002), and The Debt to Pleasure (1996), the latter of which won the 1996 Whitbread Book Award for a First Novel and 1997's Hawthornden Prize, was shortlisted for the Dublin IMPAC Award, and longlisted for the Booker Prize. Before becoming a writer, Lanchester worked variously as a football reporter, a restaurant critic, and an obituary writer.
