Author and historian
Lawrence James studied at the University of York and Merton College, Oxford. After a career as a teacher he began writing full-time in 1985, publishing Rearguard, the Last Wars of Empire in 1988. He is well known for Raj: The Making and Unmaking of British India 1997, but has written many other works, including The Rise and Fall of the British Empire (1994) and The Middle Class (2006). He has also written for the Daily Mail, the Times and the Literary Review.
