Former Chief of the General Staff
Lord Inge is a life peer and former British Army Chief of the General Staff. After graduating from Sandhurst, he served with the Green Howards in hong Kong, Germany, Libya, and Northern Ireland. Inge gradually rose through the ransk of the army to become Commander-in-Chief of the British Army of the Rhine in 1989, Chief of the General Staff (1992), and Chief of Defence Staff (1994). He became Lord Inge of Richmond (North Yorkshire) in 1997.
Lord Inge has also served as a Privy Councillor, most notably as part of the Butler committee (which determined that the intelligence used in the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq was flawed). He was appointed as a Knight of the Garter in 2002.
