Broadcaster, historian and newspaper columnist; Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central
Tristram Hunt was born in 1974 and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and University of Chicago. He joined the Labour Party in 1996 and worked for the party on the 1997 and 2001 General Election campaigns.
In 2000, he completed a Cambridge University PhD on the history of Victorian civic pride and then worked at the Centre for History and Economics, King’s College Cambridge and the Institute for Public Policy Research. In 2001 he began making TV history documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4.
Hunt's programmes include a series on the English Civil War; the Victorian Middle Classes; the life of Isaac Newton (in the Great Britons strand); the Protestant Reformation; and other one off projects. He has also made radio documentaries for BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4. He began work as a Lecturer in history at Queen Mary, University of London in 2002.
His published books include, The English Civil War: At First Hand (Penguin); Building Jerusalem: The Rise and Fall of the Victorian City (Weidenfeld & Nicolson); The Frock-Coated Communist: The Revolutionary Life of Friedrich Engels (Penguin). From 2005-2010 he served as a Trustee of the Heritage Lottery Fund, National Heritage Memorial Fund, and the Centre for Cities.
At the 2010 General Election, Hunt was elected as the Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent Central.
