Art critic and television documentary maker
Robert Hughes is an art critic and television documentary maker. He has written for a number of publications including The Spectator, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, and The Observer. He was art critic for Time magazine for thirty years. His books include The Culture of Complaint (1992), Barcelona (1993), The Fatal Shore (1987), Nothing If Not Critical (1991), and Things I Didn't Know: A Memoir (2006).
Hughes's television series include The Shock Of The New, American Visions, and Australia: Beyond the Fatal Shore, as well as numerous documentaries, including Goya: Crazy Like a Genius. Hughes is the only art critic to receive the Frank Jewett Mather Award, given by the College Art Association of America, twice. He has received numerous other awards, including the WH Smith Literary Award (1998), the Grierson Award (2009), and an International Emmy Award (2009).
