Historian
Max Hastings is the author of several books, many about warfare. In his early career as a correspondent, he reported on the 1982 Falklands War for the London Evening Standard, experiences he described in his memoir Going to the Wars. He was Editor and the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Telegraph in the late 1980s and early '90s, but returned to the Evening Standard in 1996. He retired in 2001.
Hastings has written several history books, including Bomber Command (1979), Overlord (1984), and Nemesis: The Battle for Japan, 1944-45. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and an Honorary Fellow of King's College London, and was knighted in 2002.
