Author, journalist, and literary critic
Writer, broadcaster and polemicist, Christopher Hitchens is author of the bestselling book God is not Great (2007). He is an outspoken atheist and is an Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society. After graduating from the University of Oxford, he worked for the Times Higher Education Supplement before moving to The New Statesman. He then emigrated to America, where he worked for The Nation. He has written for a number of other publications, including Vanity Fair, and The Atlantic, for whom he writes a monthly review of books.
Among Hitchens' other books are Thomas Jefferson: Author of America (2005), and Why Orwell Matters (2002). He received the 1991 Lannan Literary Award for Nonfiction, and the 2007 National Magazine Award for Columns and Commentary for his work at Vanity Fair. In 2005, Hitchens was named as one of the "Top 100 Public Intellectuals" by Foreign Policy and Britain's Prospect magazine.
