Environmental journalist; MP, Richmond Park and North Kingston
Zac Goldsmith is the former Editor of the Ecologist magazine and a prominent environmental campaigner. On leaving school he spent several years travelling around the world: he spent two years in California working as researcher for the International Society for Ecology and Culture, and later worked for the organisation in India. In 1997, he was appointed Reviews Editor of the Ecologist magazine, which was set up by his uncle Edward Goldsmith. He became Editor-in-Chief in 1998 and was at the helm when it published a controversial edition on GM foods and Monsanto, as well as for its international re-launch in 2000.
In 2005, Goldsmith publicly joined the Conservative Party, resigning as editor of The Ecologist on becoming a prospective candidate for the party in 2007. He became the Conservative Party candidate for Richmond Park and North Kingston and in the 2010 general election successfully won the seat from the Liberal Democrat incumbent. He has received a number of prizes for his environmental work, including the Beacon Prize for Philanthropy and Mikhail Gorbachev’s Global Green Award for 'International Environmental Leadership'. He has authored and contributed to a number of publications, most recently The Constant Economy (2009).
