Portuguese Member of the European Parliament
Ana Maria Gomes is a highly successful and experienced Portuguese politician. She started her career as a diplomat in 1980, serving in the Portuguese Missions at the UN in New York and Geneva. She also worked in the Tokyo and London Embassies, and was Head of Mission and Ambassador in Jakarta from 1999 to 2003. In this role she helped to re-establish diplomatic relations between Portugal and Indonesia, and helped in the process leading up to the independence of East Timor.
In 2003, she put her career as a diplomat on hold, in order to enter party politics. Following this, she was elected as a Member of the European Parliament and was re-elected in June 2009. She is also currently a City Council member of Sintra.
