William P Reynolds Professor of History, the University of Notre Dame
Felipe Fernández-Armesto formerly held chairs at Tufts University and the University of London (Queen Mary College). He taught at Charterhouse from 1976 to 1981, and spent most of his career teaching at Oxford, where he was an undergraduate and doctoral student. He has had visiting appointments at many universities and research institutes in Europe and the Americas, and has honorary doctorates from la Trobe University and the Universidad de los Andes, as well as a number of prizes, including Spain’s national prizes for research and writing in geography and gastronomy.
Fernández-Armesto's books include The Americas (2003), Ideas that changed the World (2003), The World: A Brief History (2007) and - just out – 1492: The Year our World Began (2009). He is also a Professorial Fellow of Queen Mary, University of London.
