Since graduating from St John’s University and Temple University, Pennsylvania, John Esposito has specialised in religious studies, focusing his research on Islam throughout the world. He has taught at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, and is currently a Professor of Religion, International Affairs and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, Washington DC. Among his other, wide-ranging appointments he has served as President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America and the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies, and as Vice-Chair of the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy.
Esposito is Editor-in-Chief of the four volume Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World, The Oxford History of Islam, and The Oxford Dictionary of Islam. His other written works include: Unholy War: Terror in the Name of Islam (2002), The Islamic Threat: Myth or Reality? (1999), and The Future of Islam (2010).
