Treasury spokesman for the Liberal Democrat party
Vince Cable is Business Secretary in the cabinet of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government, a position he was appointed to following the 2010 general election. He was the Treasury spokesman for the Liberal Democrat party from 2003 to 2010, and the party’s Deputy Leader from 2006 to 2010. He predicted the 2007-2010 financial crisis, and has been one of the most vocal critics of the UK government during the crunch, including his book The Storm: The World Economic Crisis and What it Means (2009).
He previously worked as Chief Economist of Shell International and as Head of Economics at Chatham House, and before becoming an MP wrote regularly for the Independent Newspaper and the Economist. He has been the Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham since 1997.
