Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University; Director of Liberty
After qualifying as a barrister in 1994, Shami Chakrabarti joined the Home Office in 1996. She joined Liberty, a civil liberties and human rights pressure group, in 2001, becoming Director in 2003. As Director of Liberty she has campaigned heavily against post-9/11 counterterrorism measures. She regularly appears on the broadcast media, including appearances on BBC Radio 4 and the Today Programme, and has contributed to a number of publications, including The Guardian. She was shortlisted for the Most Inspiring Political Figure Award at the Channel 4 Political Awards, but came second to Jamie Oliver. Chakrabarti is currently Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University.
