Former Archbishop of Canterbury (1991-2002)
George Leonard Carey was appointed 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury in 1991 and remained in the post until 2002.
Carey found Christianity whilst a teenager, and service in the RAF in Egypt and Iraq reaffirmed his faith. During that time he decided to seek ordination. He attended King’s College, London, graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Divinity and was then ordained. This was followed by obtaining post graduate MTh and PhD degrees.
Before becoming Archbishop, Carey held a number of posts, including a curacy at St. Mary’s Church in Islington; Lecturing posts at Oakhill College, Southgate, and St.John’s College, Nottingham: vicar of St Nicholas Church in Durham; Principal of Trinity College, Bristol; and Bishop of Bath and Wells.
On retirement, he entered the Lords as Baron Carey of Clifton. He currently chairs an educational group and is committed to interfaith dialogue and development.
