Herbert Wechsler Professor of Jurisprudence, Columbia University
Philip Bobbitt is Herbert Wechsler Professor of Jurisprudence at Columbia University. He has published seven books: Tragic Choices (with Judge Guido Calabresi) (1978), Constitutional Fate (1982), Democracy and Deterrence (1987), US Nuclear Strategy (with Sir Lawrence Freedman and Dr Gregory Treverton) (1989), Constitutional Interpretation (1991), The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace and the Course of History (2002), and Terror and Consent (2008).
Bobbitt has served as Associate Counsel to the President of the US, the Counselor on International Law at the US State Department, Legal Counsel to the Senate Iran-Contra Committee, and Director for Intelligence Programmes, Senior Director for Critical Infrastructure and Senior Director for Strategic Planning at the US National Security Council. He currently serves as a member of the Commission on the Continuity of Government, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
