Director of the Future of Humanity Institute at the 21st Century School
Nick Bostrom is Director of the Future of Humanity Institute at the 21st Century School and Professor of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford. He has previously held positions as a British Academy Postdoctoral Resarch Fellow in the Faculty of Philosophy and lectured at Yale’s Department of Philosophy and the Institute for Social and Policy Studies. He also has a background in physics, computational neuroscience, mathematical logic, and artificial intelligence.
In 1998, Bostrom founded the World Transhumanist Association, to ‘encourage public engagement with the prospect of future technologies being used to enhance human capacities’, and in 2004 he co-founded the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies. He is author of a number of books, including Human Enhancement (2009, with Julian Savulescu), and Global Catostrophic Risks (2008, with Martin Rees and Milan M. Cirkovic).
